What Happens If a Lug Nut Is Seized or Rounded?

Why do lug nuts seize or round off?

Two reasons: they were tightened far harder than they should have been, or corrosion has locked them on. Road salt handles the second one for us every winter in New Brunswick.

Seized or rounded lug nuts happen quite a lot, and a big reason is that people overtorque them. What we do is be transparent and communicate. When we come across a seized lug nut, we tell the customer it is seized, that we might cause damage getting it off, and that we might not be able to remove it without damage. We explain all the risks and then we ask whether we can go ahead with the service. Anything extra gets agreed with them first, not after.

The two causes

• Overtightening. An impact gun run right to the stop, with no torque wrench to finish, puts far more force on a nut than the specification calls for
• Corrosion. Salt, water, and years. It welds the nut to the stud in slow motion

Both are avoidable, and both are why every wheel we install gets finished by hand with a torque wrench set to your vehicle's specification, in a star pattern.

What if you lost your wheel lock key?

We can remove wheel locks without the key, at the same posted $50 per lug nut. That is a normal job for us, not a special case.

Wheel locks are there to stop somebody walking off with your rims, and they work, you cannot just easily take a rim off and leave with it. They are made specific to each vehicle. If you lose the key, your options are cutting them off, which carries a slight chance of damaging the rim if it is not done properly, or ordering a replacement key from the dealership and waiting for it to come in. So please do not lose the wheel lock key. And if you think you might, just replace the wheel lock nuts with regular lug nuts. If wheel locks are not something you care about, replacing them with standard nuts removes the problem permanently.

What if a stud snaps?

It happens, and when it does it is almost always because the nuts were either far too tight or too loose for a long time. Both fatigue the stud until it gives.

A stud that snaps under normal torque was already damaged. That is why the torque wrench and the re-torque matter so much: correct clamping force protects the stud, and a loose wheel destroys it.
