Are Winter Tires Mandatory in New Brunswick?

Winter tires are not legally mandatory in New Brunswick. Unlike Quebec — which requires them on every passenger vehicle from December 1 to March 15 — New Brunswick leaves the choice to the driver. But the province does regulate studded tires, most insurers offer a winter-tire discount, and the practical reality of an NB winter makes a dedicated set close to essential.

TL;DR
  • Winter tires are NOT legally required in New Brunswick.
  • Studded tires are permitted in NB from October 15 to May 1.
  • Most NB auto insurers offer a winter-tire discount — ask yours.
  • Below 7 degrees C, winter tires stop far shorter than all-seasons.

What the law actually says

New Brunswick has no statute requiring winter tires on passenger vehicles. The decision is left to the driver. This surprises people who assume Atlantic Canada must mandate them, but the only province that does is Quebec.

Where the province does step in is studded tires: they are permitted only between October 15 and May 1. Install them too early or leave them on too late and you are technically offside. Studless winter tires have no such date restriction.

Why nearly everyone runs them anyway

All-season tires harden as the temperature drops. Below roughly 7 degrees C the rubber loses flexibility and grip falls off a cliff — on cold, wet, or icy pavement an all-season can take 30 to 50 percent longer to stop than a winter tire.

Fredericton sees real winter from late October through March: black ice on bridges, packed snow on side streets, slush on the Trans-Canada. A dedicated winter set is the single biggest safety upgrade most drivers can make, which is why the large majority of NB drivers switch.

The insurance angle

Most New Brunswick insurers offer a winter-tire discount — typically a small percentage off your premium for the year. It is not automatic; you usually have to tell them you run a winter set. Over a few seasons that discount can meaningfully offset the cost of the tires and changeovers.

Frequently asked

Do I legally need winter tires in New Brunswick?

No. New Brunswick does not mandate winter tires for passenger vehicles. Only Quebec mandates them province-wide; British Columbia requires them on certain highways. That said, winter tires dramatically improve safety below 7 degrees C and are strongly recommended across Atlantic Canada.

When are studded tires allowed in New Brunswick?

Studded tires are legal in New Brunswick from October 15 to May 1. Running studs outside that window can result in a fine, so plan your spring changeover before May 1.

Will winter tires lower my insurance?

Often, yes. Many New Brunswick insurers offer a winter-tire discount of a few percent on your premium when you run a dedicated winter set. It is worth a quick call to your broker — the saving can offset part of the changeover cost.
