How to Store Your Off-Season Tires (So They Last)

Off-season tires last far longer when they are stored clean, dry, cool, and out of direct sunlight. The two biggest enemies are UV light and ozone — and the right storage orientation depends on whether the tires are mounted on rims.

TL;DR
  • Clean off brake dust and road salt before storing.
  • Cool, dry, dark — away from sunlight, furnaces, and electric motors (ozone).
  • Mounted on rims: stack flat or hang. Unmounted: stand them upright.
  • Bag each tire to slow drying out; keep them off bare concrete.

The enemies: light, ozone, heat

Rubber ages fastest in sunlight and around ozone. Sunlight breaks down the compound and fades the sidewall; ozone — produced by electric motors, furnaces, and generators — causes fine cracking. A dark, cool corner away from machinery is the goal.

Clean, bag, and orient correctly

Wash off salt and brake dust and let the tires dry fully. Slip each into a tire bag (or a heavy garbage bag) to slow moisture loss. Tires on rims can be stacked flat or hung; bare tires should stand upright. Keep everything off bare concrete, which can wick moisture.

No room or no interest in the hassle? Many drivers simply keep each season on its own rims and do a quick on-rim swap — see our changeover options.

Frequently asked

Should tires be stored standing up or lying down?

Tires mounted on rims can be stacked flat or hung on hooks. Tires NOT on rims should be stored standing upright and rotated occasionally, because stacking unmounted tires can distort them over months.

Where should I store my tires?

A cool, dry, dark place — a basement or interior garage corner is ideal. Keep them away from direct sunlight and from furnaces, water heaters, and electric motors, which generate ozone that degrades rubber. Avoid storing on bare concrete; a mat or bag helps.

Do I need to clean tires before storing them?

Yes — wash off brake dust, grime, and especially road salt, then make sure they are fully dry. Storing salt against rubber and rims through the off-season invites corrosion and premature aging.
