Rim Protection: How We Get a Tire On Without Marking Your Wheels

The part of a tire change that worries people most is the machine touching the wheel. Every part of our changer that contacts your rim is nylon or rubber faced, which is exactly what that equipment exists to do. We do not scratch rims.

TL;DR
  • Every part of the changer that touches your rim is nylon or rubber faced.
  • The mount and demount head is nylon, not bare steel on a painted flange.
  • Low-profile wheels get the most care, because stiff sidewalls take the most force.
  • That is also why low-profile is its own price tier, not a surprise added at the counter.
  • Point out any curb rash before we start, so we are both looking at the same wheel.

Where a wheel actually gets damaged

There are only a few moments in a tire change where a rim is at risk, and they are all the same moment in different clothes: something hard pressed against the rim flange while a stiff bead is forced past it. Breaking the old bead loose is one. Levering the old tire off over the flange is another. Working the new one back on is the third.

A rim does not get scratched because a tire change is inherently dangerous to it. It gets scratched when bare steel is what happens to be touching the wheel at that moment.

What our machine touches your wheel with

Nylon and rubber-faced parts, everywhere it counts. The mount and demount head that rides against the rim flange through the whole operation is nylon, so the hardest contact in the job is between your wheel and a material softer than it. The surfaces that press the bead are rubber faced for the same reason.

None of that is exotic. It is standard on equipment bought to work on alloy wheels, and it is worth saying out loud only because the customer standing at the counter has no way to see it from there.

Low-profile wheels get the most care

A low-profile tire has a short sidewall with very little flex in it. Getting that bead over the flange takes more force than a tall sidewall does, and it gives you far less room to be casual about where the flange is. Large-diameter wheels and delicate finishes compound it.

Our price grid says the same thing in numbers: low-profile is a separate tier on small and medium cars precisely because it is more careful work, not because it is a chance to charge more at the end. You see the tier when you book, not when you pay.

What we ask of you

Two things, both small. Tell us if a wheel already carries curb rash, has been refinished, or is something you care about more than the average wheel. And if a wheel is cracked or badly corroded, we would rather stop and show you than mount a tire onto a rim that should not be holding air.

Frequently asked

Will the machine scratch my rims?

No. Every point where the changer meets your wheel is nylon or rubber faced, which is the entire reason equipment is built that way. We do not scratch rims, and we are happy to show you the machine before you leave the car with us.

Are low-profile tires harder on a wheel?

They are harder on the person doing the work, which is the same thing. A short, stiff sidewall has to be worked over the rim flange with more force and less give than a tall one, and that is the moment a rim gets marked in a hurry. It is why low-profile is its own tier in our price grid rather than a surcharge sprung on you afterwards: a full set on a small low-profile car is $90 against $70 for a standard small set, and $115 against $90 on a medium.

My wheels already have curb rash. Is that a problem?

Not at all, and it does not change the service or the price. Point it out when you drop the car off so we are both looking at the same wheel before the work starts. Nobody wants to be comparing memories at the counter afterwards.

What about aftermarket or polished wheels?

Tell us. A polished lip, a refinished face, or a wheel you have gone out of your way to look after is worth thirty seconds of conversation before it goes on the machine, so we know what we are handling and you know we know.

Sit back. We've got it.
