How Long Does a Tire Change Take?

Most vehicles are in and out in about 30 minutes for a full set of four. Small and medium cars usually run close to 30 minutes off the rim. Trucks and larger vehicles take 30 to 40. Tires already on their own rims are quicker still.

That is the whole job, not just the time on the machine: dismount, mount, balance, inflate to spec, torque to spec, and package your old tires.

How long does a full set of four tires take?

Around 30 minutes for a small or medium vehicle having tires changed off the rims. Larger vehicles and trucks run 30 to 40 minutes because the tires are heavier and stiffer to work. A single tire is quicker, and a straight swap of wheels already mounted is quicker again.

Our fastest full tire change to date was 15 minutes. That is not the number to plan your day around, but it tells you what the ceiling looks like when everything lines up. Realistically, for small and medium vehicles we are close to 30 minutes on a full set off the rims, and for trucks it is usually 30 to 40. If somebody asks us at the counter, we tell them 30 minutes and we mean it. Two bays and two people who do this all day is the whole trick.

What makes a tire change take longer?

Rust, seized or damaged lug nuts, locking wheel nuts with a missing key, aftermarket wheels that need extra care, TPMS sensors that need relearning, and tires that turn out to be in worse shape than expected once they come off. None of these are common, but any of them adds time.

The things that actually slow a job down

• Seized or rounded lug nuts. The single most common delay. Nothing gets forced.
• A missing wheel lock key. We cannot remove a locking nut without it. Check your glovebox before you come.
• Rusted-on wheels that have not been off the vehicle in years.
• TPMS sensors that need a relearn after the swap, or one that turns out to be dead.
• A tire we open up and find is finished: that becomes a conversation, not a change.
• Aftermarket or delicate rims. We slow down deliberately here. We do not scratch rims.

That last one is a choice, not a delay. Speed never comes off the finish of your wheels.

Is a faster tire change a worse tire change?

No, as long as nothing is skipped. Every job gets the same steps regardless of how quickly it moves: proper mounting, machine balancing, inflation to spec, torque to spec on every wheel, and a final check. Speed comes from repetition and equipment, not from cutting steps out.
